Frequently Asked Questions

How does ducted air conditioning work?

The main components of ducted air conditioners are compressors, evaporators and condensers. In a ducted system, warm air is extracted with a blower in the evaporator, which transfers through ducts to the evaporator coils in the indoor unit. These coils contain cold, low-pressure refrigerant that absorbs heat from the warm air and turns it into a high-pressure gas. Warm air blows over the evaporator coils, becoming cool, which is delivered back to your home or office through vents in the ceiling. High-pressure refrigerant gas flows through to the compressor in the outdoor unit, which pressurises the gas and condenses it into a liquid. Liquid flows through to the condenser’s coils, also in the outdoor unit. A fan blows over the coils, dissipating some of the heat from the liquid refrigerant inside. The liquid then passes through an expansion valve, which cools and depressurises it even more before passing it back to the evaporator to repeat the cycle. For more information about ducted air conditioning, take a look at our blog.

How can I make my unit more sustainable?

Air conditioners often get a bit of a bad rap as they can significantly drain the electricity grid when everyone is trying to cool their homes simultaneously, and they contain refrigerant gases, which can contribute to global warming. The good news is that modern refrigerants don’t have that effect, and modern systems have been designed to be highly efficient. To enhance your unit’s heating and cooling capacity, consider your home’s insulation. This includes things like ceiling insulation, window coverings, and shaded areas that can help reduce energy bills. Weatherproofing your home is also worth doing, including sealing gaps under doors and around windows.
