Supply Air Diffuser Sizing and Location

The process of distributing heated or cooled air throughout your home should be seamless. The right air conditioning diffuser ensures optimum airflow performance.

What is an Air Con Diffuser?

An air con diffuser directs and controls airflow in an air conditioning system. It is a critical component of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units. In ducted air conditioning, the diffuser delivers air to each zoned area.

Air con diffusers are available in different shapes, including square, circular, or rectangular. They can be made from a variety of materials such as plastic, aluminium, stainless steel, timber, or cast iron. Diffusers also come in different configurations, such as swirl diffusers and slot diffusers.

Linear Slot Diffusers

A linear slot diffuser is a modern and flexible type of air con diffuser. With its long, narrow design, it allows airflow to be directed in multiple directions. This makes it easy to install in tight spaces and helps conceal the diffuser for a more discreet, aesthetically pleasing look.

Air Conditioner Diffuser Sizing

The size of an air con diffuser refers to the diameter of the neck where the flexible duct connects. Correct sizing depends on factors such as the area to be cooled or heated, room dimensions, ceiling height, and the overall look of the space.

  • Up to 12 sqm with a ceiling height of 2.4 – 2.7m: 200mm diffuser
  • Up to 12 sqm with a ceiling height of 3m: 250mm diffuser
  • Up to 20 sqm with a ceiling height of 2.4 – 2.7m: 250mm diffuser
  • Up to 20 sqm with a ceiling height of 3m: 300mm diffuser
  • Over 20 sqm: multiple diffusers recommended

For example, an average bedroom measuring 3m x 3m usually requires a 200mm round diffuser.

Diffuser Layout

Small rooms

  • Bedroom: Position the diffuser at the end of the bed.
  • Study: Position the diffuser in the centre.
  • Ensuite: Position the diffuser in the centre but away from sources of steam, such as the shower.

The ceiling is generally the preferred location for diffusers with horizontal airflow.

Large rooms/areas

  • A round diffuser spreads cool air around 3 metres.
  • In rooms longer than 5 metres, use multiple diffusers spaced up to 6 metres apart and within 3 metres of walls.
  • Two smaller diffusers usually provide softer and more even airflow than one large diffuser.

Example: A living room measuring 6m x 4m with a 2.7m ceiling should have two 200mm diffusers – one placed 2m from a long wall and 2m from a short wall, and the second placed 2m from the opposite end wall.

Practical Considerations

Ideal diffuser placement may be limited by:

  • Lights, skylights, ceiling fans, or ceiling roses
  • Beams and joists
  • Available roof space

The final layout should always be decided in consultation between the installer and the client.
