We calculate capacity by multiplying your daytime living area by your ceiling height (as scaled below). Of course, houses with higher ceilings require air conditioning systems with greater capacity, simply because there is more air that needs to be cooled or heated.
- For homes with a ceiling height of 2.4 metres – Multiply the total daytime living area (m²) x 150 (watts)
- For homes with a ceiling height of 2.7 metres – Multiply the total daytime living area (m²) x 160 (watts)
- For homes with a ceiling height of 3 metres – Multiply the total daytime living area (m²) x 175 (watts)
These calculations help identify the number of watts you need. Once you’ve identified that number, simply shift the decimal point three points to the left, and you will have kilowatts.
For example, let’s calculate the ideal ducted air conditioning capacity for a four bedroom home. Four bedroom homes in the Gold Coast have average daytime living areas of roughly 84 square metres, with rough ceiling heights of 2.7m. That gives us 85 x 160 watts, which equals 13.6KW. That means the average Gold Coast home requires ducted air conditioning of roughly 13.6KW capacity.
