Building A New Home With Ducted Air Conditioning?

The earlier we’re involved in installing ducted air conditioning in your new home, the more options we can offer to make your space as comfortable and efficient as possible.

Our typical process includes:

  • Initial engagement with homeowners and builders, either before tender submission or during the building phase
  • Providing a quote based on architectural drawings
  • Starting the installation after the roof and electrical work are completed

Installation Phases:

  1. Stage One: Position ductwork, indoor unit, interconnecting cables, and copper pipe
  2. Stage Two: After gyprock installation, we return to install the external unit, cut out ceiling registers (vents), and fit the control system

We’re here to assist every step of the way. Reach out to us directly, or connect us with your builders early in the process.

Upgrading Or Replacing Your Ducted Air Conditioning System?

The sooner you consider upgrading your older ducted air conditioning system, the more options we can offer to improve its performance. This allows us to assess if existing materials, like ductwork, zone controls, and registers, can be reused alongside new indoor and outdoor units.

Our process:

  • Initial discussion: We’ll begin by understanding your needs and arranging a site inspection to evaluate your current system’s condition and compatibility.
  • Options evaluation: We’ll review whether we can retain parts of your old system, extend the existing setup, or replace it entirely. For example, if you’d like to cool a larger area, we can recommend a unit with higher capacity and extend the ducting as needed.
  • Upgrade to a modern system: Our recommended systems use Inverter Technology, high-performance refrigerants like R32, and Advantage Air MyAir5 zone controls, all of which help to reduce running costs.
  • Cost effective: Our detailed quotes include removal and disposal of any obsolete parts, additional trade work if necessary, the new system components, and our full installation process.
  • Timeline: We manage the entire project, typically completing installations within a single day—so you can relax and enjoy your new system right away.

Consumer Guide: Essential Ducted Air Conditioning Advice

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Ducted Air Conditioning System?

The final cost of a ducted air conditioning system depends on several distinct factors. Ducted air conditioning Gold Coast prices range from $5,000 to over $30,000, depending on the size and layout of your property.

Here are the primary things that impact the cost of a ducted air conditioning system.

The Size Of Your Property

The biggest cost factor is the size of your property. It is determined by the total size of the living area that you want to cool / heat rather than the number of bedrooms. Larger areas require machines with higher capacity, which are more expensive.

Although bedrooms aren’t an accurate measurement of cost, it can be helpful to see a rough cost based on the number of bedrooms in your home, which you’ll find below.

A rough guide to Gold Coast ducted air conditioning cost, by number of bedrooms

  • 1 -bedroom$5,000
  • 2-bedrooms $7,000 – $8,000
  • 3-bedrooms $8,000 – $10,000
  • 4-bedrooms $10,000 – $12,000
  • 5-bedrooms +$12,000 +

Brand

Brand is another important consideration when it comes to cost. Major brands like Daikin and Panasonic are considered the industry standard for ducted air conditioning. Quality brands like that are usually more reliable, with more efficient energy consumption, and longer lifespans.

If you are on a tighter budget, there are some inexpensive alternatives. However, those cheaper systems are likely to be more costly over time, with higher maintenance costs and energy use, so it’s vital to think about the lifetime cost of a new ducted air conditioner.

The Zone Control System

Zone control systems affect the ease with which you can control your air conditioner. Control systems differ from straightforward, button-activated wall-mounted panels, to state of the art mini touch pads, with integrated smart features that allow climate adjustment from tablets or mobiles. Of course, advanced zoning systems are a little more expensive, so you should consider the type of zone-control you want from your air conditioner.

Energy Rating

Ducted air conditioners with lower energy efficiency ratings are usually cheaper to begin with, but your energy bill will be more expensive, especially over summer when your system gets frequent use. Consider more energy-efficient machines as an investment—you spend more initially, but then you enjoy lower power costs and the chance to save big over the lifetime of the machine while avoiding regular maintenance. We always advise our customers to consider lifetime costs when purchasing a new ducted air conditioning system. Often, it’s a better way to save money.

What Are the Running Costs of a Ducted Air Conditioning System?

Ducted air conditioners have different operational costs depending on:

  • The system’s capacity
  • The main cooling unit’s energy efficiency
  • The set temperature.
  • Every additional degree will increase running costs by 10-15% (see our guide for the ideal temperature settings)
  • The length of operation
  • The nature and extent of your home’s insulation

For an approximate estimate of running costs, consider the following standard setup:

  • 20kW ducted air conditioning system, with six zones
  • Average output of 8kW
  • Average use of 120 hours per quarter
  • Electricity cost is 22c/kWh

With those figures, we can calculate that the ducted air conditioning system will use 960kW per quarter (8kW x 120 hours), which comes to a total of $211 ($844 for the year), at 22c per kWh. Of course, that’s only an example and running costs do vary from one machine to another depending on usage. However, it provides an example of just how energy-efficient your new Gold Coast ducted air conditioning system could be.

How Ducted Air Conditioning Works

Ducted air conditioning systems draw air from the area that is being air-conditioned and pass that air over a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger cools or heats it, depending on your setting, and then returns the air back to the space you are heating or cooling. The process occurs within the indoor unit, which will be positioned in the roof space. Generally, air circulation is zoned to allow the user to choose the spaces that will be cooled or heated, as well as the temperatures.

Ducted air conditioners are designed to service entire homes, with a central indoor unit, and an outdoor unit. The systems offer you a lower-profile, less obvious heating or cooling experience than standard split system units, which create a ‘“fan effect.” Ducted systems also give you greater control, with house-wide temperature regulation from one centralised device. We have listed the primary features of ducted systems below.

Indoor Unit

The indoor unit is typically fitted within the roof cavity. It distributes “conditioned” air across your entire home, and consists of a heat exchange coil, fan, filters, and a remote signal receiver.

Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit is installed to the outside of your home, and is known as the condenser. It operates in tandem with the indoor unit, and pumps refrigerant between both. This unit consists of a compressor, heat exchange coil, and propeller fan.

Zones

Zones are essentially the rooms or spaces in your home that will be cooled or heated. With a ducted system, you can control which are being cooled or heated at any given time. If you have a zone control system like Advantage Air’s MyAir5, you can even heat or cool each zone to a different temperature.

Ceiling vents

Ceiling registers (or vents) are responsible for distributing air to each zone, through the ducting (or flex) that is connected to the unit. You can pick your vents according to their design, with a wide range available to suit all types of décor.

Sensors

To maintain the correct setting in each zone, ducted air conditioning has sensors that gauge the temperature.

Wall-mounted controllers

Wall mounted controllers are the central point of temperature regulation in your home. If you have a larger home (like a two-storey home) you could elect to have multiple wall-mounted controllers. Alternatively, there are smart home accessories that allow you to control air conditioning settings from a smartphone.

What Are the Benefits of Ducted Air Con?

Better energy efficiency

Larger homes often need air conditioners that can cool or heat big open spaces, for which ducted air conditioning tends to be more1 energy-efficient compared to a split system. The highest quality systems, such as Daikin and Panasonic, are generally inverter-based, which means heating and cooling are automatically adjusted according to the room’s temperature. As a result, the units only use as much energy as they have to.

In most contemporary ducted air conditioning systems, each kilowatt of electricity translates to at least three kilowatts of heating or cooling capacity, but that does fluctuate according to the system’s energy efficiency.

Less noise

Modern ducted air conditioning systems can make older split systems sound like a cyclone. In fact, even later-model split systems are usually louder than ducted ones. So, if peace and tranquillity is a priority, ducted air conditioning systems are the way to go (but remember, larger ducted systems can still produce some noise). Visual appeal is important, too, and numerous split system air conditioners are never going to look as good as a low-profile ducted solution. Aesthetic appeal is a great advantage of ducted air conditioning, because the units are concealed in ceiling or floor cavities, which also reduce noise to allow quieter operation.

More control

With ducted air conditioners, you get complete control over each zone from your wall-mounted control pad, smartphone, or even tablet. With smart home accessories, you can even control your ducted air conditioner remotely, which allows you to turn it on when you leave work so your home is nice and cool when you arrive. The same technology even allows you to set a daily timer, so it happens automatically.

Visual appeal

Split system air conditioners are mounted to your wall, which a lot of people consider visually unappealing. In contrast, ducted air conditioners are hardly visible, with the units concealed within the ceiling or beneath the floor. The only visible components are the low-profile vents, which you can easily match to your décor.

Home value

Ducted air conditioning systems offer improved efficiency, more control and visual appeal, to name a few benefits. All of those factors will increase the value of your home.

Longevity

With frequent care and maintenance, your ducted air conditioning system should last more than 15 years.

Does Reverse Cycle Air Conditioning Heat as Well as Cool?

Reverse cycle air conditioning cools and heats, and does so by using a reversible refrigeration cycle. It’s perfect for the Gold Coast, with its warm summers and cold winters.

When you set your air conditioner to cooling, it will operate as normal. But when you set it to heat, it will do two things:

  • The indoor evaporator coil will switch to a condenser coil, producing hot air instead of cold.
  • The outdoor condenser unit will switch to an evaporator, creating cold air instead of heat.

In addition, reverse cycle air conditioners filter and dehumidify air that passes through, which creates healthy and enjoyable indoor climates.
